Relearn, give yourself to the good life and do diabetes prevention
April 7, World Health Day. Av. de Madrid, Lugo. 982 231 613
As every year, on April 7 World Health Day is celebrated. This year, the World Health Organization has proposed Diabetes as a central theme. Cruz Roja, in collaboration with the Diabetes Foundation, carries out an awareness campaign throughout Spain on type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels (hyperglycemia), due to an insufficient secretion of the hormone insulin or defects in the action of the same. If not treated properly, it can create very serious complications such as neuropathies, diseases of the retina, kidney, cardiovascular system, diabetic foot, etc.
People with type 2 diabetes can produce their own insulin, but either in insufficient quantity or without being able to use it effectively. They are usually sedentary and overweight people, or with a family history of diabetes, women who have suffered diabetes during pregnancy or have had babies over 4 kg at birth. Almost half of people with type 2 diabetes are not aware that they have it, because in the beginning it can go unnoticed.
Type 2 diabetes can be prevented if we modify our personal life habits. Avoiding sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity. Incorporating a healthy and regular physical activity into your life. Including in your life the "Mediterranean diet". Flee the "miracle diets" and any type of self-medication. Saying a resounding "no" to tobacco consumption and avoiding abuse in alcohol consumption. Trusting the health professionals who are always by your side and perform a preventive check at least once a year.
Remember: It is never too late to resume or acquire healthy habits. You are always in time to improve your life. Eat healthy, move, smile, enjoy.
